This fabled, European-style hotel remains a timeless beauty, featuring Italian marble floors, Austrian crystal chandeliers, and the largest collection of Russian Circassian walnut showcased within one building. The completion of a multi-million dollar renovation elevates guest experiences with light, bright spaces that beckon guests to gather, connect and imbibe.
No detail was spared in the design and selection of materials, honoring the historic significance of Portland’s landmark hotel. New contemporary, yet classic, furniture throughout the lobby, mezzanine and public areas was carefully curated by B&B Italia, leader of high-quality modern furniture. With the same attention to detail and purposeful design found throughout the hotel, warm neutral textiles and patterns create visual interest, and a touch of creativity and beauty that is unexpected, yet so exquisitely welcome.
Each of the newly refined meeting and event spaces pay tribute to the hotel’s rich history and its builder, philanthropist and innovator Simon Benson. A steward to the invention and progression of water and the technologies surrounding it, Simon Benson fueled Portland’s history in his time through early innovations. Axminster carpet throughout each space is inspired by the underlying historic themes with patterns that evoke feelings of fluidity and serenity. Its patterning is derived from the organic veining of the marble that is found in the historic lobby and grand staircase.
The Crystal Ballroom, replete with gold leafing, Austrian crystal chandeliers, and an ornate coffered ceiling, maintains its historic elegance. Modern carpet with a painterly feel, and new textural drapery at the cathedral windows extending from ceiling to floor complements the historic detailing and creates a dramatic backdrop for weddings and special events.
The Mayfair Ballroom and pre-function space features new technology, lighting, and finishes throughout. Custom chandeliers, designed by Los Angeles based Lusive Décor, are the showcase of this space. Over 150 crystal ceiling fixtures were repurposed from the hotel’s original guestroom corridors to create dramatic shimmering light, bringing sophistication and refinement to this 5,800 square foot ballroom.
Preserving the historic detailing, other event space improvements include new down lighting, wall coverings, fixtures and technology. Monolithic features emphasize volume, space and height, drawing your eyes up to original crystal chandeliers.
El Gaucho Portland, Northwest’s iconic steakhouse, is now providing culinary services for The Benson’s meetings and special events. Catering by El Gaucho features the legendary service and exceptional quality for which the company is known, with menu selections that include El Gaucho signature classics.
Celebrations, gatherings, food and drink have always been keystones of family and community, and a part of The Benson’s foundation for more than a century. Some things just never go out of style.
